Blastocyst Transfer

Blastocyst Transfer

Transfer of embryo on D5 the 5th day after egg collection is blastocyst transfer. The embryo is grown in the IVF lab for 5 days before transferring.

Advantages:

  • Blastocyst is more developmentally advanced compared to D3 cleavage stage of embryo.  So theoretically higher chances of pregnancy.
  • One or two blastocysts is maximum that we usually transfer.  So multiple pregnancies come down.
  • Transferring on D5 also, will decrease early ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome.

Disadvantages:

  • We might require blastocyst media to culture the embryos.  So the cost of blastocyst transfer will slightly increase.
  • All the embryos might not reach the blastocyst stage.  So we might lose lot of embryos to get one or two blastocyst.

Whom to offer blastocyst transfer:

Blastocyst transfer might not necessarily be for everyone.

Who will benefit:

  • Couples with previous IVF/ICSI failure
  • Elderly women
  • Recurrent implantation failure.
