Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is one the treatment modalities for infertile couples.  It involves the direct injecting of a single sperm  into a mature egg of the female. It is done in IVF lab.

Who needs ICSI:

Failure of achieving pregnancy by other methods like timed coitus,  IUI.

It is extremely beneficial for couples dealing with male infertility issues such as low sperm counts, poor sperm quality, poor movement of sperm etc.,

When eggs cannot be fertilized by the traditional IVF methods may be due thick zone.

There are five basic steps to ICSI as follows:

  • Mature egg is held with a pipette
  • A sharp, delicate and hollow needle is used to pick up a sperm
  • This needle is inserted with utmost precision through the egg shell into the cytoplasm.
  • Once the sperm is injected  in the cytoplasm, the needle is removed carefully.
  • A day later, the eggs are checked for confirmation of normal fertilization.

Is ICSI efficient?

Most of the time ICSI is effective and in 80 percent of the cases, it gives a positive result, however, certain issues may occur during or after the process as follows:

  • Eggs may get damaged.
  • Even after the injection of the sperm, failure of fertilization.
  • Arrest of growth of embryo.
