Obstetrics & Gynecology

Obstetrics & Gynecology

It is a specialized field of medicine that deals with health of women. An obstetrician and gynaecologist is a health care professional who specialises in women’s health. Obstetricians work with pregnant women including the delivery of babies.  Gynaecology involves the female reproductive system, treating conditions like chronic pelvic diseases, sexually transmitted diseases and others.

Obstetrics involves taking care of pregnant women from pregnancy, delivery and post delivery.  It involves all the complications during pregnancy and delivery.  The obstetrician is well versed in high risk pregnancies, Gynaecology involves taking care of the female reproductive system.  It deals with menstrual disorders, problems with the uterus, problems with the ovaries, and pelvic infections.  A gynaecologist does regular check up for women’s health. Though there might be different recommendations, a woman should visit an obstetrician-gynaecologist at atleast once a year.  They might even be the primary doctor of some women

What are the areas of specialty of the OB-GYNs?

The physicians can specialise in a wide range of specialities. While some opt to specialize only in obstetrics and care for pregnant women, others just offer gynaecological care. Some of the specializing areas include:

  • Reproductive endocrinologists - They are infertility specialists. They diagnose infertility problems and offer treatment plans.
  • Maternal - foetal medicine specialists – These physicians treat the high risk pregnancies.  They specialise in caring for the health of the mother and the baby and can even oversee complicated or high-risk deliveries.
  • Urogynaecologist - They focus on the pelvic floor.  They can offer pelvic floor physical therapy, treat incontinence and perform surgery to repair the prolapsed pelvic organs.

What falls under obstetrics?

Obstetrics refers to the branch of medicine that involves the birth of a baby.  It focuses on the caring and maintenance of the health of the woman during maternity.  It includes phases like pregnancy, labour, childbirth and the postpartum period.

What is included in gynaecology?

The branch of medicine that focuses on the health of women and their reproductive health is known as gynaecology. This includes the diagnosis treatment and the care of the reproductive systems of women. This field of medicine involves the health of women from puberty through adulthood. Most of the reproductive care needed during the lifetime is covered in gynaecology. You need to visit a specialised obstetrician only during pregnancy.

Your doctor would make proper referrals if there be a need.
