What is In-Vitro Fertilization IVF?

In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology (ART) that involves fertilizing an egg with sperm outside the body in a laboratory setting. Through this procedure, an embryo can be created and subsequently transferred to a woman’s uterus to become a pregnancy. When faced with infertility problems, such as blocked fallopian tubes, male factor infertility, unexplained infertility, and other reproductive disorders, individuals and couples frequently turn to in-vitro fertilization (IVF).
Work

How Does IVF Work?

In order to make embryos through in vitro fertilization (IVF), a woman’s eggs and a man’s sperm are combined in a regulated lab setting. This approach avoids a number of natural conception phases, including the sperm’s passage through the female reproductive tract and the sperm and egg’s meeting in the fallopian tubes. By doing so, IVF can overcome many barriers to conception, providing a viable path to pregnancy for many individuals and couples.

Your IVF Journey

Stages of IVF Treatment

Understand the six key stages of in vitro fertilisation (IVF), with clear guidance from Parampara Fertility and Gynaec Centre.

Stage 01

Ovarian Stimulation

Purpose: Support the development of several eggs.

Process: Fertility medication stimulates the ovaries, with scans and blood tests used to monitor your response.

What to expect

Medication and monitoring are tailored to your treatment plan.

Stage 02

Egg Retrieval

Purpose: Collect eggs for fertilisation.

Process: Eggs are collected from the ovaries during an ultrasound-guided procedure, usually under sedation or anaesthesia.

What to expect

Your team explains preparation, recovery and aftercare.

Stage 03

Sperm Collection

Purpose: Provide sperm for laboratory fertilisation.

Process: A sperm sample is collected and prepared in the laboratory. Previously frozen sperm may be used when appropriate.

What to expect

Your team provides instructions for sample collection.

Stage 04

Fertilisation

Purpose: Fertilise eggs in the laboratory.

Process: Eggs and sperm are brought together for conventional IVF. ICSI may be recommended in selected cases.

What to expect

If fertilisation occurs, embryos are monitored as they develop.

Stage 05

Embryo Transfer

Purpose: Place a selected embryo into the uterus.

Process: An embryo is transferred using a thin catheter. Transfer may be planned in a fresh or frozen cycle.

What to expect

Your specialist discusses embryo selection and transfer timing.

Stage 06

Pregnancy Test

Purpose: Check the treatment outcome.

Process: Take a pregnancy test on the date advised by your clinic, then discuss the result with your team.

What to expect

Avoid testing early, as this can give a misleading result.

Your specialist will personalise your IVF plan, monitoring schedule and transfer timing.

    Frequently asked questions

What are the 5 stages of IVF?

The five stages of IVF are:

    • Ovarian Stimulation: Using hormones to stimulate egg production.
    • Egg Retrieval: Collecting eggs from the ovaries.
    • Fertilization: Combining eggs and sperm in a lab dish.
    • Embryo Culture: Monitoring embryo development.
    • Embryo Transfer: Placing embryos into the uterus.
How long does the IVF process take?

The IVF process typically takes 4 to 6 weeks. It includes 10-14 days of ovarian stimulation, the egg retrieval procedure, 3-5 days of fertilization and embryo culture, and embryo transfer. Within 10 to 14 days of the transfer, a pregnancy test is conducted. Initial consultations and diagnostic tests may add more time.

IVF procedures may cause discomfort but are generally manageable with medication. Hormone injections during ovarian stimulation can cause mild bloating and cramping. Egg retrieval, performed under sedation, may result in some cramping afterwards. Embryo transfer is typically painless. Overall, any discomfort is usually mild and manageable with support from your medical team.

The benefits of IVF include effective treatment for infertility, controlled timing of conception, options for using donor gametes and gestational surrogacy, support for diverse family structures, higher success rates compared to other treatments in some instances, and comprehensive emotional support throughout the process.
